The preface of the 1935 Fitzgerald's Trenton Directory describes it as "an Alphabetical Directory of Business Concerns
and Private Citizens; a Numerical Directory of Householders, Occupants of Office Buildings and Other Business Places; a Complete
Street and Avenue Guide; a Classified Business Directory, and a Business Directory of Mercer County and Morrisville, Pa.;
also a New Map of Trenton and Suburbs." A simpler definition would be an expanded Yellow Pages.
The book contains four sections. The first section, containing advertisements, is analogous to ads in the Yellow Pages.
The Trenton Directory, which lists residents and business and professional concerns in alphabetical order, is like the White
Pages. Immediately following this is a listing of Trenton rural delivery routes and business directories for Princeton, Hightstown,
Pennington, Hopewell ans small towns (such as Titusville), and Morrisville, PA. The Trenton Numerical Directory lists the
names of streets in alphabetical order, then specifies the occupants in numerical order. Finally, the Trenton Business Directory
which lists businesses and professional concerns, is like the Yellow Pages without the ads.
The information in the right-hand column was found in the alphabetical Trenton Directory. The listing showed that the
person was a tenant at the Stacy-Trent, as indicated by the entry "h Stacy-Trent Hotel" ("h" designating that the
person's "house" was the Stacy-Trent) or "res Stacy-Trent Hotel" ("res" designating that the person's "residence"
was the Stacy-Trent).
